This course is an exploration of the history of labour in India cutting across time, space and economic contexts. It is structured around several themes: freedom and bondage, forms of solidarity and action, the relationship of social structures and identities of caste and gender, the state and labour. The focus is on India but it also brings in a comparative perspective with other countries and contexts. This course hopes to help you understand the historical processes that have shaped the world of labour.
