Teaching Mathematics in the Secondary Stage

For Mathematics major students

The teaching of mathematics at the secondary level requires a proficient understanding of curriculum, subject matter, student cognition, and appropriate pedagogy. It is essential for student-teachers to be able to identify and address common misconceptions and to present the material in a way that is clear and logical to children. This course is designed to provide the student-teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this area. In addition to familiarizing them with the subject matter, the course will focus on strategies for addressing students’ reasoning, thinking, and common misconceptions, as well as ways to communicate mathematical concepts in a clear and engaging manner. The course aims to equip the student-teachers to create, gather and efficiently use learning aids. The course will also provide opportunities for analysing textbooks and students’ work, and for developing lesson plans that cater to the needs of secondary school students.
