Spoken Kannada

This course aims to enable handling of basic conversations in Kannada

Most students studying at our university come from outside Karnataka or from non-Kannada domestic backgrounds within Karnataka. This course has the potential to make a unique contribution to our UG programmes as it teaches elementary Spoken Kannada to our students and facilitates an organic connect between them and the sociocultural scene outside the university, where Kannada is the primary language of transaction. Kannada can improve the quality of student communication with the campus support-staff, most of whom are well-versed in Kannada. Students who do their curricular fieldwork in Karnataka, B.Ed. students who complete their teaching immersions at local Government Kannada-medium schools, and graduates who find jobs in Karnataka, all will find their lives to be enriched and more rewarding if they know Spoken Kannada. The course teaches how to recognise Kannada sounds, orally reproduce Kannada words in a meaningful sequence, and develop simple dialogues to survive life-situations needing Kannada. Students will become familiar with culture and customs of Karnataka, history of Kannada language and its script, while learning how to speak Kannada. Spoken Kannada will also inculcate an urge to acquire Kannada reading abilities, which (if achieved in future) will provide our students an access to world-class literature in Kannada.
