Science Fiction and Mind

Explore questions about the nature of the mind and consciousness through works of science fiction.

Science fiction is a fertile ground to engage with philosophical questions. Stories about sophisticated autonomous robots make us wonder whether man-made organisms and aliens can think, feel pain, have consciousness, communicate with, or be smarter and more innovative than us. This takes us to one of the most fundamental questions in philosophy of mind: what is the mind? Is it the brain? Is it like a very sophisticated computer software? Can individuals other than human beings have minds? How do cyborgs (persons enhanced by artificial body parts) fit into the picture? Some philosophers argue that we are cyborgs already given how intertwined our lives are with technology! In this course, we will explore these questions about the nature of the mind and consciousness and push its boundaries through works of science fiction.
