Geographical Information Systems for Sustainability

Understand spatial dimensions of sustainability

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping techniques have gained increased relevance in recent years for understanding issues related to sustainability. Knowledge of GIS and application of mapping methods are sought after skills, being put to good use in analysing and addressing sustainability challenges. In this course you will be taught the basic principles of GIS and learn to appreciate how GIS, in combination with Google Earth maps, can be used to understand the spatial dimensions of sustainability. The course will provide both a conceptual understanding of how and when to use GIS, and a hands on experience in presenting complex information in a simple and digestible form, culminating in individual mapping projects that enable you to develop greater capacity to put these skills into practice in a specific context.
