Economics and Ethics

How do economists tackle open-ended questions about welfare, equality, justice and freedom?

This course focuses on normative questions in economics which have no correct answer, and teaches students modes of reasoning to assess evaluative questions which can’t be answered using objective methods and models. Students learn moral and ethical theories in this course and then apply them to questions in economics such as : ” Are people actually free to make choices?”; Are humans rational?”; ” What is welfare and how do we measure it?”; Is the market mechanism fair?”; Is economic equality a good value to pursue?”
