Before Bengaluru became a city of flyovers, traffic jams, and tech parks, it moved to the rhythm of the bus route.
From the early days of BTC and BTS to the formation of BMTC in 1997, Bengaluru’s public transport system has carried the city through generations of change. What began in the 1940s with just over 100 buses has today grown into a massive network operating nearly 7,000 vehicles and carrying over 44 lakh passengers daily.
In this episode Varsha Ramachandra speaks to Dhanpal — a retired BMTC driver whose journey with the city spanned nearly four decades.
Through bus routes, depot memories, school children fighting to sit on the bonnet, and passengers who slowly became family, Dhanpal remembers a Bengaluru many still carry in their hearts. A city where people waited an hour for a bus, where conductors knew regular passengers by name, and where a single route could shape a lifetime of memories.

BTC ಮತ್ತು BTS ನ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ 1997 ರಲ್ಲಿ BMTC ರಚನೆಯವರೆಗೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಸಾರಿಗೆ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯು ನಗರವನ್ನು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾಗಿಸಿದೆ. 1940 ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇವಲ 100 ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಸ್ಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾದದ್ದು ಇಂದು ಸುಮಾರು 7,000 ವಾಹನಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ 44 ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರನ್ನು ಸಾಗಿಸುವ ಬೃಹತ್ ಜಾಲವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದೆ.
ಈ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವರ್ಷಾ ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ಧನಪಾಲ್ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾ, ನಗರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಸುಮಾರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಶಕಗಳ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಬಸ್ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳು, ಡಿಪೋ ನೆನಪುಗಳು, ಬಾನೆಟ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹೋರಾಡುವ ಶಾಲಾ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮತ್ತು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಕುಟುಂಬವಾದ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರ ಮೂಲಕ, ಅನೇಕರು ಇನ್ನೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ಧನಪಾಲ್ ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜನರು ಬಸ್ಗಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಗಂಟೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನಗರ, ಕಂಡಕ್ಟರ್ಗಳು ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರನ್ನು ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ಒಂದೇ ಮಾರ್ಗವು ಜೀವಮಾನದ ನೆನಪುಗಳನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲ ಅದಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಡಬಲ್ ಡೆಕ್ಕರ್ ಬಸ್ಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪುಷ್ಪಕ್ನಿಂದ ಮೆಜೆಸ್ಟಿಕ್ನ ಐಕಾನಿಕ್ ಬಸ್ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ನಗರದ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕತೆಯವರೆಗೆ, ಈ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅನೇಕ ಸ್ತರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
