Biography

Shobhna Iyer is an archaeologist specialising in the medieval Deccan. She earned a Master’s and MPhil in Ancient History from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, and also holds a Master’s in Anthropology from Stanford University, California. She has done field archaeology for over a decade and has extensive experience in survey and excavation in the Deccan.

Her MPhil thesis, Political Landscapes and the Construction of a Medieval City: An Archaeological Study of Warangal” asked methodological questions about archaeology, history, and the current understanding of premodern urbanism in India. In her future work, she intends to study borders and frontiers in history and contemporary built environments.

Shobhna has worked in travel publishing (Dorling Kindersley; Outlook Travellers), online news (Catch News) and academic publishing (Cactus Communications; Studies in History). Before joining the University, she worked most recently as a freelance copy editor and video subtitle editor.

When not working or caregiving, Shobhna reads and writes creative nonfiction.
