Labour Economics

Conceptualising labour markets for developing economies.

In the traditional economics classroom, labour economics introduces you to standard analysis of labour markets as developed in high-income economies. Here, we examine how inapplicable such models are within developing economies, and see the ways in which labour markets are conceptualised for the contexts of developing economies.

We will examine major debates in human capital theory on the role of education in influencing labour market outcomes. We will introduce you to emerging concerns in labour markets, including the changing nature of employment arrangements, the potential impacts of technological change and automation, and the informalisation of work.
