Recent research and debate has focused on whether economics and sustainability are at odds with each other. A student of development in India needs to consider if economics can offer solutions for concerns of sustainability (that its core doctrines have caused) and whether there is economic sense in pursuing sustainability. Answers to these questions could help in ensuring that sustainability is brought into developmental change at various levels and scales. We think of ‘sustainability’ in a multidimensional and dynamic sense. This course offers a historical overview of economics and sustainability, alternative economic paradigms, and how to integrate sustainability into economic analysis. We examine political economy in action through global and national policies and how to synthesise economic thoughts into sustainability.
