Defence mechanisms and immunity

How does the body respond to infection?

In today’s world, there is an increased exposure to pathogens due to the high volume of global travel and the emergence of new pathogens. We can make good choices about personal health, whether about drug use or vaccines, if we understand how the body works. You will understand the biological and biochemical processes involved in the body’s response to infection, including inflammation, vaccines and immune dysfunction.

The immune system is a complex network of molecules and cells built to identify and remove pathogens at different levels in the body. This course explores how plants and animals respond to environmental stress and infections due to pathogens like insects, fungi, bacteria and viruses.
