Introduction to Mapping and Geographical Information Systems using Quantum GIS December 2019 Batch

What will you learn?

This course provides practitioners, educators, and researchers with basic mapping and GIS skills by working with a free, open-source GIS platform (Quantum GIS) which is available to all. You will be able to

• Understand the basic principles of Geographical Information Systems(GIS).

• Appreciate how GIS can help to understand issues related to broadareas of education, development and conservation. 

• Gain familiarity with using Quantum GIS (QGIS) – a state-of-the-art free,open source GIS software. 

• Create maps using GIS, and relate these to issues of conservation,development, and other areas of research and practice. 

Pedagogy

The course is hands-on, focused on learning via doing in the lab and on the computer. You will use in-class exercise datasets for initial practice. You will work on individual locations of your choice for additional practice, relating in-class work to their area and themes of interest.

The course is designed for development and conservation practitioners and people from NGOs. Educators, researchers and PhD students may find the course interesting.

The participants will be awarded a certificate of participation on successful completion of five days.

  • • Participant introductions • Introduction to GIS • Exploring QGIS software • Exploring Google Earth • Geometric registration.
  • • Introduction to Vector Data – points, lines, polygons • Digitization • Working on individual projects – geometric registration.
  • • Introduction to Symbology and Attributes • Labeling the digitized layers • Creating a map using Map Composer • Individual projects - Digitisation of points, lines and polygons
  • • Importing and working with external datasets (e.g. elevation, riversand roads, demography) • Querying and basic GIS analysis • Individual projects - adding external layers, labelling, map making.
  • • Presentation of maps and group discussion.• Closing session.• Wrap-up, followed by group reflection, written feedback, andpresentation of certificates.

Accommodation

The course fee does not include accommodation. The university can arrange accommodatio for 06 days for additional payment of INR 7080/- (all taxes included).

Request for the same has to be made at time of application. Alternatively, participants can make their arrangements.

Travel & food

Travel to and from Bangalore, local stay, and food, is to be borne by participants.

No laptops needed

This course will be conducted at the university computer lab, so the participants are not required to bring their laptops.
