Job Title: Resident Faculty

Location: Bangalore

Azim Premji University was established in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation. The Foundation works extensively with the public school systems in many states in India, with a clear purpose - to contribute to a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. The University supports Education and related fields of human development through its programmes of study. The University offers a liberal Undergraduate degree in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Dual-degree programme in Science and Education and Postgraduate degrees in the fields of Education, Development, Public Policy, Economics & Law and Development.

The undergraduate and graduate programmes at Azim Premji University aim to promote integration of academic study with learning outside the curriculum and emotional well-being of students. One of the best ways to do this in a diverse setup (amongst a diverse student body) is to foster relationships and discussions between students, staff and faculty.

The role of the Resident Faculty Team is to create these opportunities for students to have meaningful relationships with other students, faculty and staff outside of the academic set up. The resident faculty team ensures that the residential life is vibrant and active and helps build a diverse and inclusive campus community. This is done through structured initiatives within the university and unstructured interactions that are designed by the resident faculty team.

The role of a resident faculty is a unique role developed in our university and is largely based on fundamental principles of positive engagement and care ethics. The resident faculty on campus are proactively engaged rather than only reacting to student and campus needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Being a resident at the student residences. Resident Faculty are required to stay at the student residences at least five nights a week, including some weekends. Accommodation is provided free of cost
  • Operations - Coordination of provision and supervision of basic facilities for students - physical infrastructure, food and nutrition, health and fitness, and safety. We don’t see these areas merely as transactions but as opportunities to sensitize students
  • Community engagement - Being a part and driving initiatives in the campus community which includes students, faculty and staff. The role requires to be part of one of 6 committees that exist in the university and to guide the committee on a week on week basis
  • Positive engagement - Engaging proactively with the student community and creating a variety of structured and unstructured opportunities for student learning and growth. The structured interactions can be teaching courses or other academic roles within the university
  • Emergency response
Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Suitable candidates for this position will have experience and/or demonstrate keen interest in:

  • The experience of living with and actively engaging with young adults
  • Communication and teamwork with diverse groups of individuals
  • Coordinating/managing hostel for the student age group between 17 to 26 years
  • Ability to teach courses related to different skills

Prior training/experience in counselling/mentoring students of that age group will be an added advantage.
