Azim Premji University invites applications for the Centre for Local Democracy

Azim Premji University was established in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation. The Foundation works extensively with the public education system in many states across India, with a clear purpose - to contribute to a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. The University is focussed on fields of education and development through its programmes of study that prepare professionals with integrity, competence and social commitment. Our research programmes contribute to knowledge relevant to these fields. The University offers liberal undergraduate degrees in Sciences, Economics, Humanities, and post-graduate degrees in the fields of Education, Development, Public Policy, Economics and Law and Development.

The Centre for Local Democracy (CLD) is set up by the Azim Premji Foundation as a collaborative initiative between its three functional units – Azim Premji University, Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives and the Field Institutes. The CLD intends to engage in facilitating academic and policy research, publish commissioned reports, conduct capacity building programmes for CSOs and PRIs, run higher education programmes, and work towards enlarging the space for local democracy among the civil society.

We invite applications for the Centre for Local Democracy for the following positions:

Job Title: Programme Manager (PM)

The PM-LD is expected to work with the LD team to support the work in these specific areas:

  • Expansion of the LD programme
  • Alliance building of the organisations
  • Public Narrative Building on LD
  • Certificate Course cum Action Grant

The candidate must have a relevant degree with reasonably good understanding of the LD landscape of the country with its strengths and weaknesses, and have worked in the social sector, more specifically in the space of strengthening Panchayati Raj or Forest Rights. The candidate must have firm belief in the necessity and efficacy of strong longstanding democratic institutions and democratising development interventions. The candidate must also have experience of multiple programme management involving CSO-CBO partners and stakeholders. The position requires extensive travelling, relationship building, working with CSOs, CBOs, activist groups, media personnel, etc. The candidate must be willing to work in a team of highly talented and very committed people.

  • Age group below 45 is preferred
  • 15-17 years of work experience in the social sector required
  • Experience of working on any of the aspects of LD is preferable
  • Programme management experience with multiple partners necessary
  • Networking experience will be an additional advantage

Job Title: Knowledge Manager (KM)

The KM-LD is expected to support the LD works in the following areas:

  • Status Report on Local Democracy
  • Scholarly research on LD
  • Documentation of good practices emerging from the LD work of APPI
  • Certificate course cum Action Grant
  • Short courses on LD
  • Qualification Programme on LD

The candidate must have a relevant degree and reasonable understanding of the local democracy landscape in India with its strengths and weaknesses. The candidate must have research, documentation or evaluation experiences in the areas of Panchayati Raj or Forest Rights. Experience of designing and conducting educational or capacity building programmes around LD is desirable. Commissioning and managing multi-author research, and publication will be an additional advantage. Familiarity with laws and practices of Panchayati Raj in multiple states will be preferred. The candidate must be willing to work as a part of a team with other highly experienced and talented people.

  • Age group below 45 is preferred
  • 15-17 years of work experience of which substantial part in research, documentation and capacity building on Panchayati Raj issues or Forest Rights is necessary
  • Candidates having managed commissioned research, documentations will be given preference
