Proteep grew up in Bangalore. He completed his schooling at The Valley School (KFI). After this he went to pursue further education in America, obtaining a bachelor's degree in physics (honors) and mathematics from the University of Oregon and a master's degree in optical sciences from the University of Arizona. Thereafter, he worked for several years as an optical engineer in the biotechnology and semiconductor industries. He has extensive experience in designing, manufacturing and measuring optics for astronomical telescopes.
