MANTHAN 2014, the third Annual Research Conference was held at Azim Premji University on August 6-9, 2014. The focus of the conference this year as well was on strengthening the culture of research within the Foundation. An overview of this year’s research conference is mentioned below:

Plenary Sessions

Invited speakers P Sainath and Vimala Ramachandran shared their experiences and insights on critical issues in the domains of education and development.


A total of 144 research studies were presented, 86 as oral presentation and 58 poster presentations, broadly around the following themes:

Research Workshops

Half- day and full-day workshops on themes related to research methods and applications were held, covering :

  • Action Research
  • Application of basic statistics in research, using ‘R’
  • Barefoot Research: a methodology to introduce research for grassroots / field worker
  • Literature Review
  • Research Writing Workshop
  • Understanding Knowledge, Attitude &Practice (KAP) study and its use in education and Development

MANTHAN Newsletter: An initiative by the students of Azim Premji University. Four issues of Newsletter was circulated during the conference.

Share Mela: Showcased the collaborative engagements, innovative activities and events of the Foundation with diverse stakeholders such as schools, teachers, classes, head teachers, functionaries and communities. Resources (such as teacher learning material, booklets, worksheets, best practices), state profiles (maps), reports on workshops and videos were displayed across seven stalls. Another six stalls showcased the co-development initiatives of the Foundation through posters and films on processes of module development, the modules and storytelling.
