ELIGIBILTY

1.    Who can apply?

Applications are invited from independent researchers or teams affiliated with academic institutions, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, as well as the Government can apply in principle. We welcome applicants from across all domains.

This call for proposals is for researchers external to Azim Premji Foundation. Employees of Azim Premji Foundation are not eligible to apply.

2.    Are there further eligibility criteria for this application?

Azim Premji University invites rigorous, focused proposals for research on COVID-19 in the Indian context that will provide focused, concrete results and insights to directly inform the design of actions, and responses in the near-term. Successful proposals will provide transferrable insights into actions and impacts, as well as into the processes and best-practices that have proved useful in responding to the crisis. Purely clinical or medical studies are outside the scope of this research funding. We seek proposals that range across urban and rural settings in the broad areas described, including but not limited to the objectives suggested in the call.

3.    Does Institutional affiliation have an impact on the application procedure?

If the researcher is affiliated to an Institution, and the project is selected for research funding under the Azim Premji University COVID-19 Research Funding Programme 2020, the agreement for the project will be drawn up between Azim Premji University, the Institution that the researcher is affiliated to, and the researcher themselves. The funds under this agreement will be transferred to the Institution the researcher is affiliated to.

4.    Can independent researchers apply for research funding under this programme? 

Independent researchers are welcome to apply for the Research Funding under the category ‘Independent’. In this case, the agreement for the project will be drawn up between Azim Premji University and the researcher themselves.

5.    Can the research project be carried out as a team? Is there any criterion or eligibility regarding the number
      of investigators and their eligibility?

Applications are invited from independent researchers or teams affiliated with academic institutions, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, as well as the Government can apply in principle. Independent researchers are welcome to apply for the Research Funding under the category ‘Independent’. We have not set particular criterion as regards the number of co-PI’s and their eligibility.

In case of a team submitting a proposal, in the application form, we have asked for only the details of the lead researcher / Principal Investigator (PI). However, it is required to upload the CVs of all investigators / collaborators (co-PI’s) on the project.

6.    What are the themes under the COVID-19 Research Funding Programme 2020?

  • Studies on effectiveness of various processes and interventions in reducing fatality
  • Studies of Asha workers, Anganwadi workers, ANMs, and other frontline health workers
  • Studies on the public health system
  • Role of community in delivery of health services during the COVID-19 crisis
  • Barriers and approaches to scaling up of action
  • Efforts to provide universal protection
  • Role of technology and data analysis

7.    Can a proposal be outside the themes listed in the COVID-19 Research Funding Programme - Call for Proposals?

Azim Premji University invites rigorous, focused proposals for research on COVID-19 in the Indian context that will provide focused, concrete results and insights to directly inform the design of actions, and responses in the near-term. Successful proposals will provide transferrable insights into actions and impacts, as well as into the processes and best-practices that have proved useful in responding to the crisis.

We seek proposals that range across urban and rural settings in the broad areas described, including but not limited to the objectives suggested in the call.

Purely clinical or medical studies are outside the scope of this research funding.

8.    Can I apply for only one theme or include more than one theme in a proposal?

Azim Premji University invites rigorous, focused proposals for research on COVID-19 in the Indian context; we seek proposals that range across urban and rural settings. In the Call for Proposals, we have mentioned certain broad areas in which we are inviting proposals, but this is not limited to the objectives suggested by us. Your proposal could cut across themes and combine more than one.

9.    How will the project finding be disseminated?

In keeping with the focus of the call to inform action, project reports will be disseminated to the public by the University immediately after conclusion of the three-month funding period; researchers will be free to publish their findings in other outlets.

10.    We are developing a cure for COVID-19, is our project eligible for funding?

As mentioned in the Call for Proposals, purely clinical or medical studies are outside the scope of this research funding.


TIMELINE

1.    What is the last date for submission of proposals?

The last date for submission of proposals is Sept 5, 2020. Proposals that come in after this date will not be considered.

2.    Can the last date for project submission be extended?

In keeping with the focus of the call to inform action, we are working with a focussed timeline where the project will start on October 1, 2020 (or earlier) and project reports will be disseminated to the public by the University immediately after conclusion of the three-month funding period in December 2020. We will not be able to accommodate any extensions in the date for submission of proposals.

3.    What is the timeline for this project?

This is a 3-month project with a start date of October 1, 2020 (or earlier), and the submission of final project report is by December 31, 2020.

4.    What are the important dates that I should be aware of?

BUDGET

1.    What is the total budget available for a project under this programme?

Azim Premji University COVID-19 Research Funding Programme 2020 offers research funding ranging from 5-20 lakhs for a project.

2.    Is the budget is starting from 5 lakhs?

We offer research funding for projects starting from a minimum budget of INR 5 lakhs to a maximum of INR 20 lakhs, to be utilized within an outer time limit of 3 months for project completion and report.

3.    What are the broad heads under which this budget is required to be broken up?

The budget could be broken up into the following heads: Salaries/Payment to Research Staff, Field work, Field work - Data collection, Field work - Focus group discussions, Field work – Survey, Data entry, Stationery, Dissemination, Others, and Overheads.

4.    If the project is selected under this programme, does the funding have to be utilized within the three-month period of
       October 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020?

Funding provided under this programme is required to be utilized within the project period. The project will start on October 1, 2020 (or earlier) and be complete in three-month period by December 2020.


APPLICATION PROCESS

1.    How do I apply for the COVID-19 Research Funding Programme?

Applications are required to be submitted online, using a Google account. If this is not feasible, please contact us at covidresearch@apu.edu.in for assistance.

2.    What should the proposal comprise of?

We seek a tightly focused, 3-page proposal including a detailed description and justification of methods and study location, and a clear description of the expected outcomes, as well as the relevance of findings to informing and shaping future strategies in the near short-term. A lengthy introduction and literature justification is not required. Interested applicants should submit their proposal online and upload documents mentioned below as a single pdf file:

  • Proposal of not more than 3 pages
  • Budget breakdown
  • Anticipated timeline
  • CV of all investigators / collaborators / Co-PI’s

3.    Do you have a format for the Research Proposal?

We do not have a particular format for the Research Proposal. Interested applicants should submit their proposal online and upload documents required as a single pdf file.

4.    Can multiple documents be uploaded?

The application form allows for only a single PDF to be uploaded, please save the following documents in a single PDF and upload.

  • Proposal of not more than 3 pages
  • Budget breakdown
  • Anticipated timeline
  • CV of all investigators /collaborators / Co-PI’s

5.     What is meant by CV of all investigators?

For Researchers working in teams, the lead researcher referred to as the Principal Investigator (PI) will fill in the details in the Application form. In the proposal, we have requested the Curriculum vitae (CV) / Resume of all investigators /collaborators / Co-PI’s on the project to be included.

6.     Can proposals be submitted in languages other than English?

We will not be able to accommodate your request for submission of proposals in languages other than English as we are working with tight deadlines for review and start of project. This does not permit enough time to translate these proposals for our review panel. We request you to please submit proposals in English only.

7.     Once I submit my proposal, can I edit it?

Please note that form responses cannot be edited after submission.

8.     Can I apply with more than one proposal?

Multiple proposals are welcome, please use the ‘submit another response’ button on the application form to submit again.

9.     How can we participate in the research programme organized by Azim Premji University?

Azim Premji University is seeking research proposals from those who are engaged in research on COVID-19 in the Indian context. This is not an internal research programme run by the University, but a call for proposals from researchers external to the University who will detail their own research plans and protocols. In this context, we do not have any possibilities of engagement / participation with the University directly.
