Exploring Sustainability in the Indian Context - Online Course
Date: Nov 6 - Dec 24 2020
Rapid and widespread environmental, economic and social
changes have led to urgent global questions of sustainability.
Concerns of sustainability in developing countries like India can
be very different than that of industrialised countries. In
developing countries, equity and social justice are central to
addressing sustainability, along with environmental concerns.
This interdisciplinary, multi-instructor course provides an
introduction to sustainability within the context of
development in India. We develop an integrated perspective
on sustainability along ecological and social dimensions, and
use these to examine critical themes of importance to India,
like population, food, and climate change. We explore how our
imagination of culture, markets, state, and even of nature itself
influences sustainability action. We end with examining how to
take sustainability action - as individuals, communities and
larger collectives, and across all scales, from the local to the
global.
Participants in this fully online course are expected to watch
video lectures, join interactive video-discussions with faculty,

Introduction to Nai Talim - Online course
Date: Sept 12th to Oct 17th, 2020
Last date to apply : August 31st, 2020
With the current global pandemic, there is a renewed interest in Gandhian ideas for
alternatives to Industrialism. And any alternate vision of a Good Society will require
its own education as put very aptly by John Dewey “We will know what type of education to provide, if we know what type of society we want”
With independence, India got locked into a race for Industrialism,
like everyone else in the world, and Gandhi’s educational ideas called Nai Talim
became irrelevant. The alternate school movement in India from 1990s has kept the Nai
Talim spirit alive in various ways. Similar experiments are being carried out in
several places in the world today.

Using Learning Outcomes in School Education: A Practical Approach
Date: April 6 - 10, 2020
Last date to apply: March 6, 2020
In a move towards outcome-based education, there is a stronger focus on learning outcomes in
quality assurance with respect to both teaching and students learning. Learning outcomes
describes what the students will know, understand and be able to do at the end of an academic
year. They are very critical for determining the teaching methodologies, learning activities
and assessment schemes for the successful transaction of the concepts in each subject.
Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the characteristics, benefits and challenges in
transacting learning outcomes becomes crucial for practitioners in education.
It is our endeavour, through this course, to develop a deeper understanding of what
should be the outcomes of education, across stages and subjects, and how could they
be achieved through a coherent and well-aligned pedagogy and assessment process.
The pedagogy of the course will be dialogic, multiple readings will be
used to stimulate discussions and introduce new perspectives.
The participants will be made to solve worksheets of learning outcomes,
response analysis, etc. to delve deeper with the concepts. Audio-visual
aids will also be used. An opportunity will be provided for participants
to demonstrate their learnings as group presentations using charts and power-points.
The participants will be awarded a Certificate of Participation on successful completion
of this course.

Labour Migration in India: Advanced Perspectives for Practice
Date: Feb 10 – 15, 2020
Last Date to Apply: Jan 07th, 2020
Internal labour migration has emerged as a new-age development challenge for India. High economic disparity between regions, agrarian distress compounded by adverse climatic changes has pushed more and more rural poor to Indian cities. As per Economic Survey 2016-17 there are 139 million labour migrants in India who move between the rural and urban, struggling with disenfranchisement within the boundaries of their own country and an uncertain livelihood option which is their only exit from poverty.
Given the growing pervasiveness of labour migration, its inter-connectedness with questions of urban governance, informality and more importantly its centrality to the livelihoods of the poor, we at Azim Premji University and Aajeevika Bureau are committed to building required capacities within the development sector to engage with the issue. Lately, there have been some progressive experiments by the civil society and worker organizations to understand, articulate and respond to the concerns of migrant worker communities. There is a growing body of work employing varied strategies of worker collectivization, system sensitization and design and delivery of migrant friendly solutions. It is our contention that this growing field of civil society action can benefit considerably with structured academic engagement and conceptual inputs to understanding labour migration, its drivers and the eventual outcomes.
In pursuit of this critical task, the School of Development at Azim Premji University and Centre for Migration and Labour Solutions at Aajeevika Bureau have come together to offer a short term certificate course on labour migration "Labour Migration in India: Perspectives for Practice". The six day certificate course (May 26 – June 1, 2019) aims to provide a learning platform for civil society practitioners, workers’ rights advocates and students interested in issues related to internal labour migration, urban governance and informality. Using a collaborative, experiential learning model it aims to enrich practitioners’ field insights with conceptual and critical discourses on migration.

Last date to apply: November 8th, 2019

The story of development and social change in India has a complex history influenced by colonisation,
the freedom movement, national planning, and liberalisation and globalisation which penetrated almost
all spheres of social life. Its impact has been hugely different for various class, caste, gender, and
ethnic-religious groups. And, in response, the search for a just, equitable and tolerant society has
moved from purely economic to social and now to socio-ecological approaches.
A course on development and social change is usually available only for students pursuing higher education.
Organisations working in the various areas of development too need to have a broad understanding of this story.
This short course specially designed for the development organisations intends to provide a comprehensive overview
of the history, present and future direction of this complex story.
This course offers a broad overview of the key changes in society, economy, politics and ecology that brought us
to where we are today in the country. The course further deals with the key theoretical and conceptual
frameworks which shaped and critiqued this journey, and finally highlights the new approaches and
possibilities emerging in development interventions across the world. The course is intended to
encourage organisations to reflect on their premises, orientations, and actions.

Reflective Case Study Writing for Development Practitioners
Date: July 29 – August 1, 2019
Venue: Azim Premji University, Bangalore
Development practitioners acquire a great deal of experiential knowledge and insight through the course of their work and yet little of this enters public and academic discourse around development issues. For the individual practitioner, the process of writing reflectively about their practice can help to clarify and improve practice. For the organisation, creating a culture of reflective writing can lead to critical reflection on its own work and practice, and inform its future trajectory.
The course will introduce participants to the process of thinking systematically about their work and experience, reading and analysing written work, and writing a reflective case study which goes beyond simple documentation. It will introduce students to the principles of reflective case study writing, and build capacity for critical reading, systematic analysis, and the use of primary evidence and secondary data in a critical and ethical way.
What Does the Course Offer?
- Strengthen participants’ comfort and ease with writing
- Provide participants with observational, thinking, reading, and writing frameworks to improve the content and structure of their writing
- Enable participants to write, revise, and complete one reflective case study.

Date: July 13th to Sep 02nd, 2018
Rapid and widespread environmental, economic and social
changes have led to urgent global questions of sustainability.
Concerns of sustainability in developing countries like India can
be very different than that of industrialised countries. In
developing countries, equity and social justice are central to
addressing sustainability, along with environmental concerns.
This interdisciplinary, multi-instructor course provides an
introduction to sustainability within the context of
development in India. We develop an integrated perspective
on sustainability along ecological and social dimensions, and
use these to examine critical themes of importance to India,
like population, food, and climate change. We explore how our
imagination of culture, markets, state, and even of nature itself
influences sustainability action. We end with examining how to
take sustainability action - as individuals, communities and
larger collectives, and across all scales, from the local to the
global.
Participants in this fully online course are expected to watch
video lectures, join interactive video-discussions with faculty,
and participate in discussion forums. Those who complete all
activities and tests and submit assignments will get a Certificate
of Participation from Azim Premji University.

Pedagogy of Early Reading and Writing
Date: Nov 20-25, 2017
Last Date of registration: Nov 03, 2017
The School of Continuing Education and University Resource Centre of Azim Premji University, Bangalore announces a Course on the Pedagogy of Early Reading and Writing. This course is the latest addition to our list of in service programmes, specifically designed for the faculty and teacher educators of State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), Colleges of Teacher Education(CTEs), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and the Resource Persons of non-Government organizations (NGOs) working in the field of Education and Development. This 6 day Certificate Course on Pedagogy of Early Reading and Writing will be conducted from 20th November to 25th November 2017.
The world is going through a phase of rethinking about early literacy and its relation to learning. In the recent days live debates about the relevance of reading and writing across the curriculum, as a window to all learning has woken us up to the disturbing reality that classroom pedagogy has fallen short of global discourses and practices. Literacy pedagogy needs to transform itself from the avatar of a mechanical skill to be understood as tool of the mind, a process for thinking and articulating ones thoughts. Somehow schools do not teach children to read and write in such a way as to go beyond information, search for books, extend their learning and become lifelong readers. There is a growing awareness that this understanding needs to inform classroom pedagogy in the D El Ed classrooms. This has led to the designing of this course which will prompt teacher educators to examine the current situation of literacy pedagogy and to explore the comprehensive approach to literacy pedagogy.

Language across Curriculum
Date: Nov 6-10, 2017
Last Date of registration: Oct 20, 2017
In order to enhance the capacity of practicing professionals working in the field of Education and Development, the School of Continuing Education and University Resource Centre of Azim Premji University, Bangalore has designed and conducted a number of capacity enhancement programmes till date and the present course entitled Language across Curriculum is the latest addition to our list of in service programmes specifically meant for the Faculty and teacher educators of State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), Institutes of Advanced Studies in Education (IASEs) Colleges of Teacher Education(CTEs), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and the Resource Persons of non-Government organizations (NGOs) working in the field of Education.
As all school subjects are learnt through language, teachers as well as teacher educators need to develop a critical understanding of the nature and role of language in the context of the child and the curriculum and this assumption has prompted us to design this 5 day Certificate course from 6 November to 10 November 2017.
It is pertinent to note that the course documents for the Bachelor of Education and the Diploma in Teacher Education programmes published by the National Council for Teacher Education also highlighted the importance of a Language across Curriculum perspective in teacher education. The language papers of these programmes are based on the assumption that language is a tool to understand concepts in different content areas such as Social Sciences, Sciences or Mathematics and in view of the thrust given to the Language across Curriculum perspective in the policy documents, this 5 day course will enable the participants to develop perspectives on language and to understand and experience the centrality of language by relating it to the overall objectives of the curriculum.
