Ethics in Public Health Practice

Date: February 6-10, 2017

Application deadline is extended till January 8, 2017

What kind of health threats and risks deserve an organized response by the health system? How to balance curative vs preventive and promotive care? How to communicate health messages that might conflict with local cultural norms? Public health professionals are routinely confronted with such ethical dilemmas and yet they receive little training on ethics in public health practice. In order to address such training gap, we at Azim Premji University, offer a week long course on Ethics in Public Health Practice. We believe that ethical and reflective public health practice is the cornerstone of realizing the common goal of Health for All.

The course runs through four modules. These cover

  • Why Public Health Ethics?
  • Working with programs: Ethics issues in implementation and evaluation
  • Agenda setting and priorities in policy making
  • Risk and vulnerability: Working with research guidelines and protocols.

Professionals involved in a range of public health roles including research, program implementation and evaluation, advocacy and communications in health are encouraged to apply. Participants would expect to learn to have comprehensive understanding of ethical principles in public health and their applications in different settings, develop analytical skills to conceive of possible resolutions to ethical dilemmas in their work settings and sensitivity to adapt universal guidelines and protocols in specific cultural contexts.
