Third edition of Samvaad - A Tribal Conclave

TATA Steel CSR and Tribal Cultural Society has organized the third edition of Samvaad - A Tribal Conclave from 15th – 19th November, 2016 at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Samvaad is a pan-India Tribal conclave. The central theme for this year was 'Tribal Health Systems'. About 1500 artists, thought leaders, eminent personalities, academics and activists participated in the five-day conclave.

Child Malnutrition and Dietary Choices: Narratives from tribal families of HD Kote taluk, Mysuru District, Karnataka (Shreelata Rao Seshadri, Nilanjan Bhor, Suraj Parab, Latha. N) received the Best Paper award at the Conclave. The paper is based on the study ‘Do we know what they eat and why? A study on school-level dietary adequacy and impact of cultural beliefs on dietary choice’, examining the prevalence of malnutrition and associated social determinants among school-going children in three districts of Karnataka.

The main objectives of this paper were to:

  • Estimate the prevalence of malnutrition among primary school-going tribal children
  • Examine the contribution of dietary adequacy and diversity to child malnutrition
