News - Second Convocation Ceremony of the University held on September 22, 2014

The Second Convocation Ceremony of Azim Premji University was held on September 22, 2014 in the style unique to us - no gowns, no medals but with our trademark warmth.

From the Class of 2012 -14, we had 88 graduating students; 52 from the M.A. Development programme and 36 from the M.A. Education programme. These students who were conferred with degrees are already working with various social sector organizations across the country having completed the programme in May 2014. Students of the graduating batch were welcomed with a shawl, draped by their faculty at the registration desk. They received a docket containing the student magazine Karvan, to which they all had contributed and a group photo of their batch. The junior batch presented them with handmade goodie bags as a gesture of welcome.

The programme began at 3.00 p.m. with a welcome address by Anurag Behar, Vice Chancellor, Azim Premji University. This was followed by Azim Premji, Chancellor of the University addressing the gathering. He talked about the importance of a good education in transforming the life of children and building a better society. He talked of the priorities that the Foundation was focusing on and the genesis of the University and its work. His message to the graduating batch was that they should make a real difference to the world they live in and in their own way contribute to the building of a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. Indira Patil and Vithika Pande from the Class of 2013-15, accompanied by Abhishek Nagaraj Class of 2014-16 on the guitar, sang a musical medley of a Rabindrasangeet, a Kannada song by Kuvempu and a Sufi couplet based on a Kabir doha. Degree certificates were awarded to the students by Azim Premji. The formal part of the programme came to an end with the singing of the National Anthem lead by a student group. This was followed by group photographs with graduating batch and Foundation members.

It was in Gudalur, an amazing landscape in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, that I did my two week field immersion. The exposure to the vast share of unseen indigenous knowledge and culture of the Adivasi community in Gudalur was an exciting experience.
